Our Mission
Amazing Grace Lutheran Church has been serving Amarillo and Canyon for 4 years.
In the summer of 2021, Pastor Hans Thomford and his wife joined a small core group to begin exploring the gospel opportunities in Amarillo. Although the location and size of the church have changed, the mission and core values have not. We use the tagline “Grace Leads Us Home” to encourage everyone we encounter that God freely gives this gift of grace. This breaks all of our preconceived notions that we can do anything to contribute to our relationship with God or our salvation. He has already paid it all and offers salvation as a free gift through His amazing grace.
We’re currently worshipping in a rental space that has been beautifully outfitted for our needs. We feel very blessed to have a space where we can worship, build relationships, and host events. The growth that we’ve experience has impacted our ability to host new guests and serve our community. There’s a need to build a permanent home for Amazing Grace to serve our neighbors for generations to come.

God has immensely blessed our congregation over the last 4 years of public worship. He has grown this mission church from a small group of 11 people gathered in a living room to 100 members worshipping in our current rental space.

The Plan
Phase 1: Land Purchase
We completed our initial campaign to purchase land for the future home of Amazing Grace. In July 2026, we were able to purchase and fully pay off 6 acres of land in a prime location between Amarillo and Canyon.
Building Project
In the second portion of our campaign, we’re focusing on the building project. By reaching our $1,000,000 goal, we pray that God will bless our growing ministry to be a cornerstone of the Amarillo and Canyon communities for generations to come.
We have a generous donor who has pledged a 1:2 match up to $100,000. This means that if we reach $200,000 they will offer a $100,000 contribution!
Building on Grace
Phase 2: Setting the Cornerstone
As we set the cornerstone, we’ll be covering the majority of project expenses in order to break ground, begin building, and work on the structure. When we reach this monetary goal, we will be actively pouring a foundation for our future church home!
Phase 3: Fitted Together
Every gift becomes part of something bigger as we create spaces that build community and make room for relationships to grow and glorify God. This phase will focus on completing the inside design and fixtures for our worship space, classrooms, and fellowship areas.
Phase 4: Setting the Capstone
A capstone is meant to be placed on the top of a building to complete and protect the structure. In the same way, this final phase will allow us to pay off our mortgage, complete final touches, and preserve Amazing Grace for future generations.

Our church body, WELS, generously offers grants of up to $750k for the total project. One of the grants is for acquiring land and the other is for the church building. In order to utilize these grants most effectively, our church needs to raise $500k.

For the building phase of our project, our church body (WELS) offers a grant of $575,000. When we take out our mortgage, we’re able to utilize this grant. This means we must reach our total goal to fully utilize this generous offer.
